The private home of influential German architect Ernst Ziller (1837-1923), who left his mark in the design of several Greek private and public buildings, will be fully restored and open to the public by February 2019, Culture Minister Lydia Koniordou said on Thursday, according to ANA.
During a tour of the work in the Ziller-Loverdos house on 6 Mavromichali Street in central Athens, Koniordou announced that the building would house the Byzantine art collection of Ionian and Popular Bank founder Dionysios Loverdos.
The three-story house covering 1,100 sq.m. was constructed by Ziller in 1885. He lived there with his family until 1912, when Loverdos bought the building in auction; he later built a chapel with an impressive mosaic decoration. Loverdos’ descendants donated his collection to the Byzantine and Christian Museum in 1979.
