German publication focused on Athens as a top cultural and travel destination

  • Athens, as an ideal cultural and leisure destination, was the central topic of an article in the important local newspaper Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung in Heidelberg, Germany.

Under the title “The Cradle of Democracy”, the full-page article, published on February 22, 2025, one day before the German elections, was written by journalist Dr. Heiko Patrick Wacker, who visited Athens from February 12 to 15, 2025. His visit took place as part of a familiarization trip, which was organized by the Head of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO). Foreign Minister of Germany, Nicoletta Lekanidi, aims to extend the tourist season in Greece and strengthen cultural tourism and city trips in the German market.

Detailed tour of the monuments of Athens

Dr. Wacker toured the emblematic historical monuments of Athens, exploring its cultural heritage.

  • Acropolis: The columnist was impressed by the panoramic view of Athens and spoke positively about the accessibility of the monument. Special mention was made of the request for the return of the Parthenon Marbles, emphasizing that the modern Acropolis Museum strengthens this international request.
  • Ancient Agora: The journalist visited the exceptionally preserved Temple of Hephaestus and Hadrian’s Library, noting that “the juxtaposition of history with modern everyday life is a trademark of the city.” He also pointed out the quiet atmosphere and green spaces of the Ancient Agora.
  • National Archaeological Museum: Dr. Wacker presented the Antikythera Mechanism in detail, highlighting its importance as an ancient technological achievement, which is still the subject of international scientific research.

Political dimension and connection with the German elections

The columnist points out that in Athens “popular sovereignty was being fought for the first time in history”, drawing a parallel with the German elections of February 23, 2025. In his article, he emphasizes the importance of political participation, comparing it to Athenian democracy, where citizens had an active role in decisions through institutionalized procedures.

Athens Tourism Outlook

The publication also includes practical information for German visitors, such as direct flights to Athens, airport transfers and accommodation options.

Extension of the tribute in Auto Classic Magazin

During his visit, Dr. Wacker also visited the Hellenic Automobile Museum, in order to edit a four-page thematic report for the magazine Auto Classic Magazin, which will be published in April 2025.

The tribute in Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung constitutes an important promotion for Athens in the German market, promoting the Greek capital as a leading destination for cultural tourism and leisure.
