The planning of the Municipality of Rethymno is in full swing in view of this year’s tourist season, with the aim of excellent preparation and the promotion of hospitality at the highest level. In this context, the annual meeting of the Municipality’s Tourism Development and Promotion Committee was held, where actions and interventions for the smooth operation of the city during the season were discussed.
Traffic regulations and management of the Old Town
Particular emphasis was placed on traffic regulation, with measures that include:
- The use of cameras to monitor tourist buses and record any violations.
- The implementation of the ring road in the Old Town, the designation of special loading and unloading locations, and the tackling of illegal parking on the ring road.
- Water and waste management
- In the event of water supply problems, losses will be covered by the three new refineries in Perivolia. At the same time, a new plan will be implemented for waste collection:
- In the New Town, collection routes will be increased.
- In the Old Town, collection will be by appointment, in order to avoid uncontrolled waste disposal.
Need for immediate support for Rethymno Hospital
The situation of Rethymno Hospital remains an important issue, which faces serious shortages, especially in the Emergency Departments. As the Deputy Mayor for Social Policy, Anna Eleftheriadou-Ghika, points out:
“The picture at the Hospital is disappointing. There are no doctors or triage areas in the Emergency Departments, only one nurse. The situation is borderline and poses risks for both residents and visitors.”
The Municipality of Rethymno continues its interventions, seeking to ensure a tourist season with the best possible conditions for both visitors and residents.
