A Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment and operation of a Destination Management and Promotion Organization (DMMO) was signed by the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, and the Mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokairinos.
The agreement constitutes an important step towards the sustainable tourism development of Heraklion, as DMMOs are recognized as strategic tools for enhancing the competitiveness of Greek destinations. As Ms. Kefalogianni noted, these organizations function as a coordination mechanism between the public and private sectors, contributing decisively to the upgrading of the services provided and the creation of authentic travel experiences.
“Our priority is to promote sustainable tourism development and enrich the tourism offer, while simultaneously extending the tourist season,” she stated, emphasizing the role of DMMOs as a bridge of cooperation between all stakeholders.
The establishment of the DMMO for Heraklion is expected to strengthen the comparative advantages of the region and contribute significantly to the diffusion of tourism throughout the year.
The Minister made special reference to the wealth of Heraklion, highlighting the cultural heritage and natural resources of the region, elements that can highlight the city as an ideal city break destination. At the same time, she emphasized the potential for developing thematic forms of tourism, such as cultural, gastronomic, wine, sports, medical, and conference tourism.

As part of her visit, the Minister also met with the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, at the headquarters of the Region, where strategic priorities for the overall tourism development of the island were discussed.
