The Greek surprise destination that is top for budget Christmas holidays for Germans

A Greek city break destination has emerged among the 10 best in Europe for budget Christmas holidays for German travelers during the upcoming festive season.

According to a survey conducted by the travel platform KAYAK.de, owned by Booking Holdings, next to the “behemoths” of European capitals that are traditionally popular Christmas destinations, Thessaloniki also appears, with airfare prices that exceed London, Rome and Paris.

Specifically, the average price of a return economy class flight to Thessaloniki is 238 euros per person, with the Greek city in 10th place in the ranking of the cheapest Christmas destinations for Germans.

The research was based on flight searches via KAYAK.de and affiliated brands, conducted from June 15 to September 10, 2025, for flights departing from December 20, 2025 to January 2, 2026, and returning from December 25, 2025 to January 10, 2026, from all German airports. The resulting data was compared with searches in the corresponding periods in 2024 and 2025 respectively. All fares are based on an average for return economy class travel.

Currently, the cheapest destination is London, with an average flight cost of 150 euros, down 8% compared to last year.

Paris follows in second place (176 euros), with a slight increase compared to last year.

In third place are Rome and Vienna (179 euros), with Rome being 17% cheaper than last year.

They are followed by Dublin (186 euros), Edinburgh (199 euros), Barcelona (213 euros), Oslo (214 euros) and Stockholm (222 euros).
