Supermarket that sells surplus food opens in Denmark

The first supermarket with surplus food has opened in Danish capital Copenhagen. Instituted by a humanitarian NGO operating in Denmark, Wefood’ was officially opened by Princess Marie and the minister for food and environment, Eva Kjer Hansen. The NGO Folkekirkens Nødhjælp sees this as a way to deal with food wastage.

The store is located at Amagerbrogade 151 and sells food that would otherwise be thrown out at 30-50 percent lower price. Wefood is run by volunteers and all the profits will go to Folkekirkens Nødhjælp’s projects in developing countries.

It is estimated that the people of Denmark throw out in excess of 700,000 tonnes of food annually. This accounts for about 11.6 billion kroner in value at a time when almost 800 million people live in hunger every day worldwide. The NGO said that the store would be open to shoppers who want to have a good deal as well as to environmentally conscious customers, who want to combat food waste.

Per Bjerre from the NGO behind the market, Folkekirkens Nødhjælp, said: “WeFood is the first supermarket of its kind in Denmark and perhaps the world as it is not just aimed at low-income shoppers but anyone who is concerned about the amount of food waste produced in this country.”
