Mathew Leckie handed Australia a 1-0 win over Greece with the last kick of the match in the first game of a friendly double header in Sydney at ANZ Stadium.
It looked as though Australia would be held by a plucky Greek outfit despite 57% of the ball, 61% of the territory and 17 shots – although just three on target.
Tim Cahill, who came off the bench for Apostolos Giannou, thought he had won the game for the hosts moments before Leckie’s goal, but his header was rubbed out by the linesman, who ruled that Alex Gersbach’s corner had gone out before curling back in.
Then in the 94th minute Leckie collected a pass from Gersbach with his back to goal, turned, and smashed the ball home from the edge of the box, his third goal in green and gold.
“Definitely (it’s a relief to score),” Leckie told Fox Sports afterwards.
“There’s a lot of talk I don’t score enough as a forward.
“I try to keep it out of my mind … luckily enough I got one today.
“Hopefully I can start some momentum.”
According to the organizers, the game was watched by approximately 45,000 spectators, many of them expatriates.
