3 Cypriot athletes to participate in first day of Rio 2016 Games

Three Cypriot athletes will compete during the first day of the 31st modern Olympic Games in Rio, in swimming and gymnastics.

The opening ceremony of the Olympics took place at the Maracana Stadium. The Cypriot team was the 46th team to enter the stadium among 207 delegations. The Cypriot flag was held by silver medalist of the London Olympic Games, sailing athlete Pavlos Kontides.

Today, 18-year-old Sotiria Neofytou will compete in the women’s 100m butterfly, while 22 year-old Iacovos Hadjiconstantinou will compete in the men’s 400m freestyle.

Later on, 18-year-old Marios Georgiou will compete in the gymnastics, men`s individual all-around.

Meanwhile, the Cypriot team lost a weightlifting athlete, 24 year-old Antonis Martasides, who failed to pass a substance test and has to return home.

Fifteen Cypriot athletes will participate in the Games, in track and field, sailing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming and cycling-road.
