Cypriot athletes competing in the Rio 2016 Olympics continue their effort on Saturday.
Apostolos Parellis takes part in the discus final at 4:50pm Cyprus time.
He is the second Cypriot athlete to compete in the Olympics track and field final, after high jumper Kyriakos Ioannou in 2012.
Kontides continues effort with a positive spirit
Cypriot Olympic silver medallist in sailing (London 2012) Pavlos Kontides continues his effort in the Rio Olympics with two more races on Saturday, before the medal race on Monday.
According to Cyprus Sport Writers` Union reporter Erodotos Miltiadous, now Kontides ranks 10th in the general ranking of the Laser Men Race, having finished 8th and 14th in the 7th and 8th races respectively on Friday.
In statements after the 8th race Kontides was optimistic.
“I believe I can reach for a medal and I will do my utmost in the remaining races to achieve it,” he said, adding that “I am very positive, nothing is over.”
Cariolou completes Olympic effort, ranks 19th in the world
Fellow Cypriot sailor Andreas Cariolou who competed in the RS:X completed on Friday his Rio Olympics effort, having finished 22nd, 19th and 20th in the last three races.
Cariolou now ranks 19th in the world with 181 points.
Papaioannou continues with women’s 200m on Monday
Cypriot track & field athlete Ramona Papaioannou was not able to go through to the semifinals of women’s 100m, having reached the finish line of Heat 4 in 6th with 11.61s. She now ranks 45th in the world.
“Today just wasn’t my day,” the Cypriot athlete said to Miltiadous. “I will watch the race later to identify the mistakes made in order to correct them,” she added.
She competes for a spot in the semifinals in the women’s 200m on Monday.
“I just want to achieve a good time in the 200 metres and beat my own personal record. If I manage to do this I will be pleased,” Papaioannou pointed out. Her personal best is 23.19s since August 2015.
Chasikos competes in skeet shooting qualifiers
Cypriot shooting athlete Andreas Chasikos continues his effort at the Rio 2016 skeet qualifiers. By the end of the first day of the qualifiers Chasikos had 69/75 points
