The Athens and Epidaurus Festival embraces the Greek capital

“An opening to the city”, the new Athens and Epidaurus Festival’s institution, could be described as a “festival within the Festival”, since it encompasses a wide range of events, such as initiatives in non-theatrical settings, as well as activist interventions not only in the city of Athens but also in areas of Piraeus and Elefsina. This multifaceted venture addresses the introversion, which tends to overwhelm the public sphere, as well as the fear of difference, and its resulting racist attitudes.

“An opening to the city” takes place with the support of the Municipality of Athens and the Athens Culture Net. It is structured in four separate sections. The first, City: Myth and History, includes site specific plays, performances and other interventions, focusing getting to know the urban landscape through wandering in it. The second section, Poetic and musical passions, includes poetic and musical performances, inviting audiences to discover Athens in a new light, away from the everyday hustle and bustle. The third section, Athens: Places of Memory, takes place in cooperation with the Network of Associations and Citizens, and the Greek Environmental Society, and includes guided tours, walks, music and theater. Performances outside the walls is the fourth unit, which includes performances taking place in non-theatrical settings, emphasizing lived experience and diversity.

Through “An opening to the City”, the Festival becomes what it can and truly must be: A festival for its city, a pillar of innovative creation, artistically motivating citizens themselves.
