Volksbuhne theater troupe takes the stage at the Athens Festival

From June 17-24, Volksbuhne, the famous Berlin theater troupe, takes the Athens Festival stage with three major theatrical performances, complemented by many parallel actions, including a masterclass with Hans-Thies Lehmann, a party scored by DJ Duo Portobello (William Minke, Trystan Pütter), a talk about Volksbuhne with Hans-Thies Lehmann and director Rene Pollesch, as well as many other of the troupe’s artists. Three of the company’s famous wagons, with which artists traveled to present their performances in isolated areas and neighborhoods, will be stationed at 260 Piraeus, to host these actions.

Program

Rene Pollesch: I love you, but I chose de-dramatization

Directed by Rene Pollesch

A hilarious performance that poses major philosophical issues takes place at the Volksbuhne’s Rollende Road Show wagons. Dramaturg and director Rene Pollesch, known for his political style, presents a socially charged performance. As he often does, Pollesch has come up with the text in cooperation with the actors, humorously touching on issues concerning modern society.

When: June 17 – 18, 22:00

Where: 206 Piraeus

Admission: € 10-20

Fyodor Dostoyevsky: The Player

Directed by Frank Castorf

Frank Castorf, Volksbuhne’s outgoing artistic director, has in the past adapted many of the great Russian writer’s novels. In “The Player”, he uses the technique of live filming, combined with his characteristic directorial style and a strong cast. The director sees Dostoyevsky’s manifesto on gambling addiction as “a grandiose, lively, powerful firework of inaction and immobility,” inspired by the writer’s life.

When: 19 – 20 June, 19:00

Where: 206 Piraeus

Admission: € 5-40

A talk with the director will follow the June 19 show.

Dieter Roth: Murmel Murmel

Directed by Herbert Fritsch

The play is based on Dieter Roth’s novel Murmur, self-published by the author in 1974. Only a single word was repeated in its 178 pages: “Murmel”. In the early 1980s, Roth gave Fritsch permission to adapt his work for the stage. In 2012 Fritsch made good on his promise. In this surrealistic performance, fourteen actors murmur the book’s sole word, and transform the text into a hypnotic, psychedelic experience.

When: June 23-24, 21:00

Where: Olympia theater

Admission: € 15-30

The performances are presented with Greek supertitles. For more information, please visit the Festival’s website.
