As the Athens Festival’s Athens events draw to a close, the Camerata-Friends of Music Orchestra brings to the Herod Atticus Odeon its production of “Sweeney Todd – The demon barber of Fleet street”. In its third annual encounter with the genre, the orchestra surprises the Athens audience with a musical that critics have called Broadway’s greatest artistic achievement. Stephen Sondheim’s and Hugh Wheeler’s Sweeney Todd was introduced in 1979, garnering many Tony awards in that season. Its Athens Festival production features a cast of 26 and an orchestra of 35, conducted by Giorgos Petrou, who is also directing a cast that includes Haris Andrianos, Nantia Kontogeorgi, Aris Plaskasovitis, Mirsini Margariti, Christophoros Stampoglis, Yiannis Kalivas, Giannis Christopoulos, Anna Koutsaftikim Christos Kechris and others.
