Sting, the British musician who became known through the band The Police in the late 1970s and then went on to have a successful solo career, returns to Athens for two concerts in the context of the Athens and Epidaurus Festival at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on the 22 and 23 of June, 2018.
Composer, singer, songwriter, actor, writer and activist, Sting was born in Newcastle, England, before moving to London in 1977 and forming iconic band The Police together with Stuart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five studio albums, won six Grammy awards and two Brits awards and was included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
Sting’s last album, titled 57th & 9th, released in November 2016, was followed by a critically acclaimed tour with 115 concerts in North America, Asia, Latin America and Europe.
He has taken part in over 15 films, produced the film A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and in 1989 he starred in Broadway’s The Threepenny Opera. His latest theatrical project The Last Ship, nominated for a Tony Award, was inspired by the singer’s memories from the shipbuilding community in Wallsend, Northumberland, where he grew up. The show, for which he composed the music and wrote the lyrics, was staged on Broadway for the 2014/15 season and the following year went on tour in England.
In addition to his artistic work, Sting is also an activist. Together with his wife, Trudie Styler, they established the Rainforest Fund in 1989 to protect the tropical forests and the indigenous peoples that live there. Together, they have organized 18 charity concerts to raise money and awareness about the planet’s endangered resources. Since its inception, the Rainforest Fund has been extended to a network of affiliated organizations working in over 20 countries around the world.
