Sasha Waltz brings “Kreatur” performance to Athens Megaron

The new, exciting Sasha Waltz choreography entitled Kreatur, which had its world premiered last summer in Berlin, will be featured for only two performances at the Athens Concert Hall’s Alexandra Triandi Hall today and tomorrow.

After Körper, a choreography in her trilogy on the body, the famous Berlin choreographer who is always pursuing a correspondence with other artforms, meets for the first time two iconoclast artists: groundbreaking fashion designer Iris van Herpen, world famous for designing clothes with an architectural quality, and lighting designer Urs Schönebaum, who has collaborated with great theater and cinema directors such as Pierre Audi, Michael Haneke, and Robert Wilson, as well as with great visual artists, such as Marina Abramovic and William Kentridge.

Basing her work on dance, costumes, and lighting, Sasha Waltz uses the bodies of 14 dancers in her group to create a work that becomes one with the music of the Soundwalk Collective.

One of the elements that really shapes the performance is the costumes of Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen. Known for the heretic fashion designs, Van Herpen here makes use of all the weapons in her arsenal of interventions built so far, so as to add a truly futuristic aesthetics to Sasha Waltz’s work. It is no coincidence that the costumes were created with the most modern techniques of 3D printing and lasercutting.

The Soundwalk Collective’s score for Kreatur uses sound recordings from the interiors of various factories and landmark Berlin buildings that have been reperpused, such as the Berghain techno club in Berlin, housed in an old Friedrichshafen power production building, or the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial museum, which is housed in Stasi’s political prison buildings. These emblematic 20th century buildings represent power, control and mass production, while they also have been the first witnesses to the radical change in the social and acoustic landscape that surrounds us.

The performance runs for 95 minutes without a break, and is not suitable for audiences under 16 years old.
