Thousands of people dressed as Santa Claus flooded Chania in Crete on Wednesday for the 8th Annual “Santa Run Chania”, with all the proceeds going to children’s charities, according to greekreporter.com.
The crowd of runners which left the starting gates at noon was like a big red river of love and solidarity flowing through the streets of the city center, spreading joy and good vibes.
Each year on December 26th, people from every corner of Crete as well as other parts of Greece arrive in Chania to take part in the Santa Run, which has proved to be one of the most successful charity runs in Greece.
The Chania Santa Run is organized in cooperation with local agencies, which make grants to four organizations that care for children across Greece who are facing health problems. Thanks to the participation of thousands of runners over the past seven years, it is now an established holiday tradition.
Organizers believe that this year’s proceeds exceeded the amount raised last year, based on the number of people registered.
The event began at 1:00 PM (1300 GMT) with the starting line at the First Chania High School. The streets of the city were flooded with people and the town looked like a huge, festive holiday party, with DJ’s playing music and locals giving candy and sweets to the runners.
