The Consulate General of Greece in New York announced the opening of “Monitoring Solitude 2.0”, an art exhibit by Mania Efstathiou, on Thursday February 7th, from 6:00-7:30 PM. Konstantinos Koutras, the Greek Consul General announced in a press release that the show will be held on the premises of the Greek Consulate in New York City, according to greekreporter.com
Mania Efstathiou will present a body of mixed-media artwork created during the past three years in this, her sixth solo exhibition. The theme of her work is the profound loneliness in both the human experience and the space that surrounds it.
Efstathiou stresses the absence of the “Other,” accentuated in void interiors and fractured or distorted urban landscapes. Her medium is a combination of traditional painting, drawing, and photographic material from her personal archive fused together in digital prints.
Referencing the desolate realism of Edward Hopper, she creates imposing compositions which integrate the Metaphysical with the Realistic. She introduces the viewer to silent, fogbound environments, where the human body is visually present or implied.
Mania Efstathiou was born in Athens, Greece in 1962. She studied medicine and specialized in nuclear medicine in Thessaloniki where she worked in hospitals and medical laboratories. She then graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Thessaloniki, and ever since, she has been employed as a full-time artist.
She has had five solo exhibitions in Greece and has taken part in numerous group shows in Europe and Asia.
Helen Verdeli, Associate Professor of Psychology at Columbia University, will focus on Efstathiou’s work in a keynote lecture during the opening titled The “Universal Bond of Separateness”.
