Greece’s biggest cinematic event, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF) celebrates its 60 years of existence and opens tonight, October 31, with the screening of Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” and will close with “Jojo Rabbit” by Taika Waititi, according to int.ert.gr.
Through to November 10, cinema fans will have the opportunity to choose from an exciting program that features hundreds of films from around the world, tributes, cinematic surprises, as well as a series of parallel events. This year’s guests include “The Pope of Trash,” American director John Waters, British director Joanna Hogg and Catalan director Albert Serra who will be in Thessaloniki to present their work.
Instead of celebrating by looking back on its sixty years, the festival turns toward the future of cinema itself. This year, the theme of the International Competition section is “The Overview Effect,” referring to the effect that astronauts feel as they observe the Earth from space for the first time and perceive the world in its entirety. This is a new emotion in the realm of human experience, and one that changes your awareness of the world we live in and the cosmos itself.
A new competition section is introduced this year, called “Meet the Neighbors,” which will feature ten films by up and coming and acclaimed film directors from Southeast Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The TIFF will be held in the historic headquarters of the Festival, Olympion cinema, in the four screening theaters in Thessaloniki’s Port, and in cinemas in regional municipalities.
