“From Homer’s World: Tinos and Cyclades in the Mycenaean Age” at Athens Benaki Museum

The Benaki Museum presents the archaeological exhibition titled “From Homer’s World: Tinos and the Cyclades in the Mycenaean Age”, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades and the Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation through March 8, 2020, int.ert.gr reports.

This important exhibition sheds light on unknown aspects of the Cycladic past: 151 selected objects, representative items of pottery, metalwork, the minor arts, figurine-modeling, and jewelry-making, reveal facets of the remarkable cultural heritage of the Mycenaeans, who were source of inspiration for the pinnacles of world literature, the Iliad and the Odyssey. The narrative is structured in units that shed light on basic human activities, such as everyday life, worship, war, funerary customs.

At the center of the show is the rare Aegean Mycenaean vaulted tomb in Agia Thekla, in northern Tinos. The small monument was unearthed during excavations and its remains were studied by the late Tinian Archaeologist George Despinis in 1979.

Displayed too are antiquities from other significant prehistoric sites in the Aegean, specifically from Naxos, Delos, Mykonos, Paros, Melos, Sifnos, Thera and Kea, thus offering visitors a fuller picture of the nature and importance of Mycenaean Civilization in the Cyclades.
