The fourth ministerial meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) was held in Cairo on Tuesday, with Energy ministers of the founding members, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Italy, Jordan, and Palestine, ANA reports.
The member countries announced the entry into force of the EMGF Statute as of March 1, 2021, and reaffirmed the EMGF objectives as a platform for structured dialogue on natural gas policy. They also noted that the EMGF will help unlock the full gas resources potential in the Eastern Mediterranean region, in full respect of its members’ rights over their natural resources in accordance with International Law.
Meanwhile, Greek firm IGI Poseidon SA and Israel Natural Gas Lines Company on Monday signed an addendum to the 2019 Memorandum of Understanding in favor of coordinated development of the EastMed Pipeline in Israel, DEPA International Projects reported on Tuesday.
The agreement aims to connect the Israeli gas transmission system to the EastMEd project and facilitate the flow of natural gas from sources in the region to Italy and Europe via Cyprus.
This project will “facilitate economic growth and ensure the supply of natural gas to Crete, and Cyprus areas that currently do not have access to it”, noted DEPA International Projects CEO & Chairman of IGI Poseidon Konstantinos Xifaras.
