Oxi Day is celebrated annually in Greece on October 28th to mark General Ioannis Metaxas’ strong reply of “OXI” to Mussolini’s ultimatum to surrender to Italian troops that were prepared to invade Greece at the beginning of World War II. Greece went on to repel Italian forces, defy fascism, and fought a long and courageous battle against the Axis powers, earning praise from Allied leaders.
The Daughters of Penelope commemorates the 81st Anniversary of “OXI” Day, observing it as a day to celebrate freedom, justice, liberty, and the passion of the Hellenic spirit.

Congressman Chris Pappas also announced that he and the Hellenic Caucus were honoring October 28th by introducing the bipartisan Oxi Day resolution. The announcement included quotes of support from leaders of Greek community organizations such as Daughters of Penelope Grand President Kathy Bizoukas, who said: “The Daughters of Penelope sincerely appreciates Congressman Pappas’ commitment to the proper recognition of Oxi Day with his sponsorship of a resolution to properly recognize the significance and legacy of Greece’s defiant `No’ to Axis Powers in the early stages of World War II. We also thank and commend the bipartisan support of many Hellenic Caucus members who joined on the resolution as original co-sponsors. We proudly support the resolution.”
