The Order of St. Andrew, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, hosted their Athenagoras Human Rights Award Banquet on October 30 at New York Hilton Midtown in New York City.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, concluding the first week of his historic Apostolic Visit to the United States, presented the prestigious award – previous recipients included Mother Teresa, President Joe Biden, past presidents Jimmy Carter and George H. W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush, and Nobel laureates Mikhail Gorbachev and Elie Wiesel – to four scientists “whose extraordinary efforts led to honored those scientists whose extraordinary efforts led to worldwide covid vaccines and therapeutics saving millions of lives. The honorees included Albert Bourla, Ph.D., DVM, CEO of Pfizer, Ugur Sahin, MD and Ozlem Tureci, MD, Co-Founders of BioNTech and George D. Yancopoulos, MD, Ph.D. and Christos Kyratsous, Ph.D. of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.
The 900 guests who attended the annual event whose fellowship dimension was especially strong after last year’s `pandemic pause’ and the two-year dearth of the usual community events that bring them together locally and nationally were welcomed by Dr. Anthony Limberakis, National Commander of the Order of St. Andrew. Alex M. Azar II, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services served as master of ceremonies.
His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros, greeted by the guests with standing ovations, offered to warn praise for the honorees and expressed their appreciation for the dedication and generosity of the Archons across the country.
