2nd European Conference on Border Management closes in Athens with joint statement

The European Union must protect its external borders effectively and offer asylum in an organized fashion to those who really need it, Greek Migration & Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachi said on Friday, ANA reports.

“Unfortunately, today it is the human traffickers who ‘sell’ places in our societies,” Mitarachi told a press conference at the conclusion of the two-day 2nd European Conference on Border Management organized in Athens, “not to those most in need, but to those that pay the fees.”

The conference and the press conference were co-hosted by Greece, Austria, Lithuania, and Poland, who were represented by Interior Ministers Gerhard Karner (Austria), Agne Bilotaite (Lithuania), and Bartosz Grodecki (Poland), besides Mitarachi.
