Greek-American lawyer Maria Markou was in Chicago last week to handle citizenship applications for expatriates under the auspices of the Greek Consulate General, as well as to deliver an informative speech to the public regarding bureaucratic and legal matters in Greece of concern to Greek-Americans.
At the speech, held at the event hall of the St. Demetrios of Elmhurst community in Chicago, about 200 individuals attended. They had the opportunity to ask questions and resolve critical queries on tax and inheritance issues, as well as matters concerning consular affairs, visas, conscription, and changes regarding property registration and real estate transactions in Greece.
“We discussed issues related to naturalization, pensions, taxation, consular affairs, visas, conscription, and the Land Registry. Particularly, we saw that there is great concern among the public about taxation, as well as conscription issues and changes in the law regarding unauthorized construction. Additionally, we touched upon the topic of divorces for foreign nationals, namely divorces issued in America that also need to be recognized in Greece. Subsequently, a question-and-answer session followed, and at our expense, we hosted a reception for the attendees.”
