The Hellenic Film Society (HFS) held the traditional cutting of the Vasilopita on January 28 and honored its founding president Jimmy DeMetro for his dedication over the years. The event followed the announcement on January 25 that the Board of Directors had elected Maria C. Miles as the new President of HFS as DeMetro will be stepping back from the day-to-day operations though he remains on the Board as President Emeritus and will continue to be active in the organization that promotes Greek film in the United States.
Miles gave the welcoming remarks at the event, thanking everyone for attending, including family, friends, Board members, and volunteers present, and pointed out that DeMetro has “really collected a fine group of people.”
Miles said: “I don’t want to say I’m doing anything other than trying to halfway fill his shoes, maybe, if I can, but I have told him he’s not going anywhere… he is the backbone of this organization, he’s been spearheading Greek film for 17 years, without him, we would know nothing about Greek cinema in New York and most of America for that matter, Atlanta, Chicago… we appreciate you and we love you.”
She then presented DeMetro with a gift and read the inscription “Founder and President with deep gratitude for your unwavering dedication, vision, and leadership.”
