High attendance at the Alternative Tourism Festival in Chania

With high attendance, multi-faceted activities, and the “aroma” of religious tourism, the 3rd Alternative Tourism & Experiences Festival “260 km memories” of the Municipality of Chania concluded on Sunday, May 18, transforming Katehaki Square at the Venetian Port into a vibrant hub of authentic Cretan experiences for three days.

50 exhibitors – one Crete, infinite experiences

The festival, implemented by the Municipality’s Tourism Office and the Municipal Port Fund, brought together 50 exhibitors from all prefectures of the island, who presented proposals that go beyond the classic tourist “paths” – from hiking & gastronomy tours to thematic cultural routes.

At the same time, the public participated in:

  • Homemade wine competition
  • Hagiography workshop
  • Stargazing with the Association of Friends of Astronomy of Crete
  • Preparation of traditional Sfakian pie

This year’s thematic peak was religious-pilgrimage tourism. Seven representatives of Patriarchates and Orthodox Churches from six countries traveled to Chania, marking the opening of new, specialized markets.

The central event was the meeting at the City Hall (17/05) with the Metropolitan of Belgium & Exarch of the Netherlands-Luxembourg Athenagoras, who announced his intention to conclude a memorandum of cooperation between the Municipality of Chania and the Office of the Orthodox Church in the EU – a development that is expected to enhance the promotion of the destination in European church networks.

The next step

Given the growing interest in thematic forms of travel, “260 km memories” upgrades the tourist “map” of Chania, adding strong religious and cultural points of reference. The upcoming memorandum of cooperation with the Orthodox Church in the EU is expected to be a game changer, bringing organized ecclesiastical missions, pilgrims, and travelers of high cultural interest to the Cretan shores.
