With the atmospheric nobility of Hydra as a backdrop and the June light bathing the waters of the Argosaronic Gulf, Miaoulia 2025, one of the most important institutions of memory and culture in Greece, returns this year. The events are dedicated to the memory of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, the emblematic naval figure of the War of Independence, and culminate in the impressive reenactment of the historical naval battle.
This year’s celebrations extend over a period of approximately two weeks and combine historical memory with contemporary cultural creation. Exhibitions, speeches, concerts, artistic activities, theatrical events, and naval ceremonies flood every corner of the island, transforming it into a living museum of honor and pride.
The heart of the events remains firmly focused on Andreas Miaoulis. As every year, the lekythos containing the Admiral’s heart is transferred from the Historical Archive-Museum of Hydra to the Holy Cathedral. There, a doxology is performed in the presence of authorities and citizens. A procession follows to the castle of Kavos, where a memorial service is held and wreaths are laid at the statue of the hero.
The climax comes on June 28, when the night sky of Hydra is illuminated by fireworks and the sea becomes the setting for a reenactment of the Elder’s naval battle. There, in front of the eyes of thousands of visitors, the moment of the burning of the Ottoman frigate is revived – in a shocking visual and historical performance, with the participation of boats, artists, and volunteers.
Miaoulia is not just a celebration, but a living bond with History. It connects the past with the present and invests in the future of the island, strengthening Hydra’s tourist identity, as well as its cultural reach. The event is under the auspices of the Municipality of Hydra, with the support of the Navy, the Attica Region, as well as cultural institutions.
For this year, an increased attendance is expected, with already high interest from travel agencies and cultural associations. Hydra puts on its festive attire and invites residents and visitors on a journey of honor, memory, and culture
