At the initiative of the Pelion Society of Letters and Arts, a two-day conference is planned to be held on July 11 and 12 in Zagora and Chorefto, Magnesia, with the central theme “The Church of Saint Nicholas in Chorefto, Pelion – The monument and its restoration project”. The event is an important opportunity to highlight one of the most important historical monuments in the region, which dates back to the 17th century and has suffered serious damage over the years.
The two-day program includes speeches by the scientists and craftsmen who contributed to the restoration of the church. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the various phases and techniques applied, while at the same time, the architectural plans, photographic material, and the findings collected by the competent Ephorate of Antiquities will be exhibited.
A special place of honor at the event will be held by Ms. Ioanna Zimbo, the sponsor who financed the project in its entirety. Originally from the region, Ms. Zimbo demonstrated her love for the place and its history in practice, supporting the restoration of a monument that, without her contribution, might have remained in a state of abandonment. The public recognition of her contribution will be through an honorary event, which aims not only to thank her but also to encourage other sponsors to support similar efforts to save cultural monuments.
The two-day conference aims not only to inform experts but also to raise awareness among the general public, locals, and visitors about the need to protect the historical monuments of Pelion. The monuments of the region are numerous and important, but unfortunately, they remain largely abandoned, awaiting rescue interventions that the state cannot undertake alone.
The event will be advertised both locally and nationwide, through social media, the printed and electronic press, television, and radio, while admission will be free for the public. In this way, the Pelion Society of Letters and Arts seeks to create a lively interest in the history and cultural heritage of the region, hoping that the two-day conference will be the trigger for further actions and collaborations.
