The Strata of Psiloritis | Thousands Participate in Crete’s Most Authentic Experiential Event

On July 27, Crete rises high — to where the earth touches the sky, and tradition merges with experiential tourism. The annual ascent of Psiloritis, part of the event “The Strata of Psiloritis,” returns this year stronger than ever, featuring a new logo, fresh visual identity, and an even greater impact on local life and experiential tourism.

The summit of Psiloritis, at 2,456 meters, a sacred and mythical place, once again attracts thousands of nature lovers, hikers, and visitors from around the world. Starting from Livadia Mylopotamos, participants begin an early morning journey — a rite of passage — to the Holy Cross at the peak, where a religious service will be held, offering a rare experience of spirituality and connection with the landscape.

From Canada to Mygeros’ Hollow
This year’s participation is estimated at around 2,000 people, although in some years it has exceeded 5,000 visitors. As Mary Chnari, president of the Cultural Association of Livadiotes Worldwide “Timios Stavros,” told Tornos News, “The Strata” attracts people of all ages, from Crete, the rest of Greece, and abroad — this year, families from Canada are coming exclusively to take part in the ascent.

More Than a Hike — A Social, Cultural, and Tourism Celebration
The Strata is not just a hiking route. It is a multifaceted event that highlights the Cretan way of life, local entrepreneurship, mountain region products, and the cultural richness of the area. The Psiloritis Geopark, recognized by UNESCO, is promoted internationally through the event, which has now established itself as a leading experiential tourism occasion.

The route begins at the refuge in Mygeros’ Hollow, managed by the Cultural Association. This year, a mini-bus service will transport visitors from the village to the refuge, while rescue teams and security staff will be stationed at key points to ensure safety and traffic control.

An Inclusive Experience
From experienced mountaineers to families with small children, the Strata brings together people united by a love for the mountain. Participants are advised to bring essentials like hiking boots, a flashlight, water, and windbreaker, while the organizers take care of the rest. The route becomes part of life, and the summit becomes part of the soul.

Culture, Tradition, and Social Action
This year’s event includes hands-on workshops, such as traditional cheesemaking, alongside social initiatives like awareness campaigns aimed at reducing alcohol consumption among youth. All these efforts are supported by local authorities, associations, and residents who keep the community spirit and hospitality alive.

The Strata of Psiloritis has become a modern symbol of Crete — a meeting point of people and values. A mecca of experiential tourism where nature, faith, tradition, and solidarity walk together, explains Mrs. Chnari with meaning.
