The Municipality of Leros, recognizing the many years of significant contribution of Mr. Konstantinos Pachos, Honorary Citizen of Leros and director of the newspaper “Leriaka Nea” for 48 years, invites him to attend the events organized in honor of the cultural heritage of the island.
Recently, at the historical site of Broutzi, the ancient communication system of the Fryktorias was planned for the first time in Leros, in collaboration with the Municipality and the Leros Theater Group. This is an effort to highlight and preserve the cultural identity of the region through live performances and educational activities.
Additionally, on August 10, Mr. Pachos will be honored at the Leros Municipal Library for his work and dedication to the island and its residents, in an event that highlights the local community’s respect for people who have made significant contributions to the community.
What are Phryktorias
Phryktorias were an ancient Greek communication system that used fires or flames as a means of transmitting messages over long distances. They functioned as a primitive type of optical telecommunication, where fires were lit at specific points, usually on hills or towers, in order to transmit signals quickly along a network of observation posts.
This mechanism was used mainly for military purposes, such as warning of raids or attacks, but also for the immediate transmission of important information between cities and fortresses. The word “Fryktoria” comes from the verb “φρυκτῶ” which means “to light” or “to burn”.
In Ancient Greece, the Fryktorias were an effective communication system, which allowed for the rapid transmission of messages in inaccessible areas and remote places, far from modern means of communication.
The presentation of the Fryktorias in Leros, combined with cultural activity and the promotion of local history, aims to raise awareness and educate residents and visitors about the ancient technologies and traditions that shaped our cultural heritage.
