SNFCC: Christmas with Ice Skating, Lights, and Stories on the Edge of the City

At the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), December always begins with the same ritual: lights switch on, the Canal glows, and the park fills with music. On Saturday, November 29, at 19:00, the “Christmas World at SNFCC” returns, unofficially marking the start of the holiday season for all of Athens.

Three tall Christmas trees in the Agora, dozens of illuminated plane trees along the Canal, and the first notes from the polyphonic The Loop Quartet set the mood. This is followed by Nina Mazani with swing and jazz covers, a live performance reminiscent of a small Broadway Christmas scene with the backdrop of the National Library and the Greek National Opera. The evening is hosted by Eugenia Samara and broadcast on television and online, reaching as far as New York’s Lincoln Center, as part of the SNF–LC Agora collaboration.

Ice at the Canal, Light in the Park

The ice rink on the northern bank of the Canal has become a holiday tradition. From November 29 to January 7, children and adults don helmets, gloves, and skates, circling under the Athens sky with choreographed fountains and festive installations as the backdrop. Entry is free with online registration, making skating one of the city’s most accessible Christmas experiences.

Meanwhile, Stavros Niarchos Park transforms into an outdoor light gallery. This year’s Lighting Installations Festival, titled BioLumina, draws inspiration from bioluminescence—the phenomenon where living organisms emit their own light. Greek and international artists create glowing butterflies, floating “dandelions,” celestial birds, and a luminous whale amidst the park’s greenery, producing a nightscape that feels like a digital fairy tale.

Concerts, Theater, Cinema

Throughout December, SNFCC is filled with music and stories: classical and baroque concerts, collaborations with El Sistema Greece, jazz ensembles, and special tributes spread from the Lighthouse to the Agora.

The Lighthouse also hosts the theatrical performance “Urgent Christmas” by the Syntechnia tou Yeliou, a family story about friendship and solidarity that beautifully resonates with the holiday spirit.

Park Your Cinema: Christmas Edition transforms the Park Kiosk into a winter cinema with favorite films for all ages, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Meanwhile, the Christmas Makers’ Market brings together small creators, design objects, workshops, and DJ sets, turning Pefkoni into a festive street market.

For panoramic views, the Lighthouse also features a pop-up rooftop bar with sights from the Saronic Gulf to the Acropolis, warm drinks, cocktails, and DJ music.

New Year at the Canal

The program peaks on New Year’s Eve. Fireworks over the Canal, the ice rink open until dawn, concerts, and DJ sets meet the city’s first race of the year—the SNF RUN: 2026 FIRST RUN—culminating in a big party at the Agora.

All these activities are made possible by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and are either free or very affordable, making SNFCC a reference point for those who want to celebrate the holidays without overspending.

In practice, the Christmas World at SNFCC is more than a schedule of events: it is an open public space, lit and alive, inviting the city to share moments—from skating at the rink to welcoming the New Year at the Canal.
