Twinning of Soufli – Lefkara: Alliance of two “tourist villages” with a shared cultural identity

The Municipality of Soufli approved the twinning protocol with the Municipality of Lefkara in Cyprus, laying the foundation for a permanent partnership based on the principles of cooperation, mutual respect, and shared development. The initiative aims to create lasting ties between the two communities, strengthening international contacts and opening new opportunities for the exchange of experiences across all areas of public life.

Cultural ties with a strong identity

The collaboration focuses on promoting the history, monuments, and both modern and traditional culture of the two regions through joint events, artistic activities, and interactions between cultural organizations. Soufli and Lefkara, both recognized by the World Tourism Organization as global tourist villages, possess a strong heritage of craftsmanship and creativity: Soufli’s silk products and Lefkara’s embroideries form a shared reference point and a basis for thematic cooperation.

Partnerships in energy, environment, and economy

Within the twinning framework, cooperation will be strengthened in the fields of energy and environmental protection. The initiative also includes fostering connections between businesses and professional groups to implement joint inter-municipal projects concerning the market, innovation, and tourism. The twinning further encompasses support for investment initiatives, aiming to enhance local entrepreneurship and economic outreach.

Tourism and shared experiences

A central aspect of the collaboration is creating conditions for exchanging tourism experiences and efficiently using available resources. Close cooperation between the local tourism associations of the two municipalities is planned, emphasizing the thematic promotion of their cultural and architectural heritage, religious art, and the Christmas-themed villages that both municipalities organize annually.

Education, social policy, and knowledge exchange

The two municipalities will also develop links in the field of education, with mutual participation in events both locally and abroad. Additionally, socially significant programs will be implemented, including initiatives targeting special population groups. The partnership will be strengthened through reciprocal visits of delegations, aiming to exchange expertise, adopt modern methods, and introduce innovative solutions in local governance.

Implementation mechanisms and joint initiatives

The collaboration will be realized through the exchange of information and best practices in tourism, culture, economy, sports, energy, environment, and education. It includes joint regional and international initiatives, participation in events hosted by each municipality, and mutual visits of officials and staff from both municipalities.
