German Tourism: Travelers over 50 accounted for 55% of spending in 2015

The seniors age group over 50 is becoming increasingly important for companies and travel agencies in Germany. According to research by Gfk, approximately 55% of total expenditure on holidays by Germans in 2015 came from travelers in this age group.

Other interesting findings include:

  •  Family travel by families with one child increased last year by 12%
  • The number of people traveling alone increased by 10%
  • Journeys of young adults from 20-34 years increased by 15%.
  • Travelers aged 50-64 years and over 65 years of age increased by 7%.
  • 1 in 2 trips involved organized vacation packages. Dynamic holidays also increased by 18%.
  • Beach holidays had a 35% share of total sales. Educational trips and tours represented a 20% share in sales.
  • City breaks increased in 2015 by 8%.
  • Mmountain holiday and wellness trips were selected by fewer Germans last year.
