According to research conduced by the Polytechnic of Crete in conjunction with the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, foreign tourists from non-Scandinavian countries visiting the island of Crete make up nearly half the total number from 2010 onwards.
The annual report indicates that the percentage of non-Scandinavian tourists has skyrocketed by 176 percent in the past 5 years. According to the report this is an impressive number given that up until 2010 70 percent of foreign visitors to Crete came from Scandinavian countries.
Other findings show that out of the total number of foreigners arriving at the Chania airport, 85 percent prefer to stay in Chania prefecture for their holidays, 13 percent choose Rethymno, while the rest go to Heraklion and Lasithi prefectures.
