Athens is starting to look like a deserted city as the last remaining citizens flock to ports, bus and train terminals for the traditional mid-August exodus around the August 15, Assumption Day Holiday.
One of the greatest exits in recent years is in progress from the port of Piraeus, while traffic is estimated to have increased by 15% compared to the same period last year.
The available tickets for routes to the islands of the Cyclades and the Aegean Sea are now difficult to find, while Piraeus is jammed packed with cars trying to reach the port.
Last week traffic around the port was so heavy that some car-riding passengers missed their corresponding ship departures.
Traffic is also intense at bus and train stations and the Athens International Airport.
