Santorini remains one of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide, thenationalherald.com notes in a recent article.
The locals would like to help tourists who flock to the island before they get there with some travel tips and advice, according to an article in The Travel which listed the “20 Things Locals Wish Tourists Knew about Santorini before Visiting.”
Some of the tips are basic commonsense, like don’t climb over people’s fences or trespass on private property to get a better view of the sunset, don’t stay on your phone the entire time, and Santorini is not Mykonos.
Other tips are practical, like bring cash since many businesses may not accept credit cards or Apple pay or whatever the kids are using these days, being prepared the intense heat in the summer months and for hiking with the proper footwear when you visit the volcano, and not bothering to find smoke-free areas.
Encouraging the tourists to speak some Greek and visit other towns on the island beyond the most famous ones, Oia and Fira, and the various beaches also make sense if you truly want to experience the culture. The museums are also very interesting, highlighting the unique Cycladic culture of Santorini.
Relaxing, taking time to savor the slower pace of life, respecting others and their culture, and being open to real-world experiences, outside of getting that perfect Instagram photo, should be priorities anywhere you vacation.
