The Municipal Council of the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands approved the establishment of the Tourism Promotion and Development Committee. The decision was made in a climate of consensus, as is especially appropriate for tourism issues.
The establishment of the Committee was announced last December, and in the meantime,e the members were selected, while the operating regulations were drawn up.
This decision is a turning point for the Municipality’s tourism strategy, as for the first time in such a committee, the emphasis is given to stakeholders, i.e., the representatives of the people who manage tourism in the field, and the scientists and specialists, who are carriers of knowledge and innovation.
It is characteristic that of the 33 members of the Committee, 13 are representatives of tourism organizations and entry gates, while another 13 are scientists and experts in a number of cutting-edge subjects. The members of the Municipal Council are 3, as are the service executives, while the Committee – also for the first time – also includes a representative of the Ionian Islands Region, signaling the excellent climate of cooperation between the two levels of local government.
The purpose of the Committee is to advise and propose to the Municipal Council on issues related to tourism strategy and sustainable development. In order to ensure the efficiency of the Committee, three working groups are foreseen, on the axes of Thematic and Special Tourism, Sustainable Development, and Destination Promotion.
With these data, as emphasized, the Tourism Promotion and Development Committee of the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands is certain to contribute greatly to addressing the challenges facing the place as a tourist destination, but also to exploiting the opportunities, in a coordinated and planned manner in the medium and long term.
