Expedia announced on Thursday, May 9, the launch of Expedia Trip Matching, an innovative feature that allows travelers to create personalized travel plans based on Instagram reels, which can then be booked directly from the platform.
Users can share any travel reel – whether from popular content creators or viral posts – directly with Expedia, which, using artificial intelligence (AI), generates destination suggestions, itineraries, and tips based on the video content.
As Jochen Koedijk, Chief Marketing Officer at Expedia Group, explains:
“It’s no secret that young people are getting their travel inspiration from social media, with research showing that 80% of millennials rely on it for their travel decisions. We want to be where the inspiration is – on social media. With Trip Matching, that inspiration is easily converted into a booking.”
How Expedia Trip Matching Works:
- Get inspired: Using Instagram, a user finds a reel that showcases a destination or experience they’re interested in.
- Share it with Expedia: Shares the reel to the @Expedia account.
- Get suggestions: Expedia responds with personalized travel suggestions, itineraries, and resources for planning a trip based on the video.
- Book your trip: The user can instantly book from the customized suggestion.
Trip Matching is currently available in beta at Expedia.com/tripmatching and will soon be available to all travelers in the United States.
With this initiative, Expedia becomes the first OTA to connect travel inspiration on social media with instant travel booking through AI, dynamically responding to the behavior of a new generation of users, who are mobile, social-first, and seek experiences with immediacy.
