Mayor of Kythnos: "The island has now become a tourist destination"

The mayor of the island, Stamatis Garderis, expressed his satisfaction with the course of this year’s tourist season in Kythnos, speaking to the newspaper Koini Gnomi Cyclades. As he emphasized, the number of visitors exceeded any precedent, with visitors now choosing Kythnos as an autonomous and conscious destination, and not as an “intermediate station”.

“From a strictly 40-day season that we once had, today we are talking about tourist traffic that reaches 100 days”, the mayor said characteristically, highlighting the qualitative upgrade that has occurred in recent years in accommodation and catering.

Despite the positive image, Mr. Garderis emphasized that the increased demand creates pressure on the infrastructure. In particular, he focused on the issues of water adequacy and waste management, emphasizing the need for immediate planning and projects that will support sustainable development. “We are concerned about whether we can manage this increased demand without burdening the environment and the daily lives of the residents,” he said.

The mayor called for cooperation between the municipality, the region and the state in order to make the necessary investments and determine the carrying capacity of the island. “Let’s see what our real capabilities are and act accordingly,” he noted.
