Thomson Airways cancels entire Tunisia summer programme

Tui UK has cancelled its entire summer programme to Tunisia, stating that it will not restart flights until at least November 1.

In a statement the company said that the decision followed the British Foreign Office’s continued advice against all but essential travel to the country.

It said “Thomson Airways therefore confirmed the cancellation of further outbound flights from the UK to Tunisia, up to and including Monday October 31.”

Discounts and refunds

Customers affected by this will be able to change their holiday to any of our destinations currently on sale, without incurring an amendment fee, or receive a full refund.

The company said if customer’s new holiday departs on or before October 31, it is offering a £30 per person discount, regardless of whether the alternative holiday is cheaper or more expensive – providing the new holiday is booked by February 29 2016.

We would like to thank our customers for their continued patience and apologise for the inconvenience caused, whilst the FCO advice travel to Tunisia is in place,” it added. “We hope this information allows our customers to make alternative holiday plans.”

Challenges for a comeback

It comes after the UK boss of Thomas Cook Chris Mottershead told TTG earlier this month that he believed Tunisia “could still make a comeback this year”.

Thomas Cook is currently due to return to the country at the end of April, although Mottershead admitted the company would be reviewing this in a “couple of weeks”.

Speaking to TTG, Mottershead insisted: “Tunisia could still make a comeback – there is time.

The challenge will be when we restart the programme. If it continues to be delayed, then the start of the programme will be delayed.

Earlier this month the Tunisian government said it would be extending its state of emergency until February 21.

Thirty-eight people were killed in July last year – 30 of whom were British – when a gunman opened fire on a beach in Sousse.

Just four months earlier 21 people, mostly European tourists, were killed when three terrorists attacked the Bardo National Museum in the capital of Tunis.
