On Wednesday employees of ground services want to demonstrate at nine German airports for better working conditions and more money.
As the United Services Union (Verdi) announced on Monday, they will join other international bodies representing employees at a protest on 1 June.
On the same day, similar actions will take place at airports in Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and the USA.
In Germany, demonstrations will be held at the airports in Berlin, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne, Stuttgart and Munich.
To what extent protests will affect flight operations and whether there will be delays and cancellations, is not yet known.
Passengers are nevertheless advised to check for information of their current flight status before departure.
According to Verdi, in a survey conducted among 18,000 employees last year, 83 percent of respondents complained that their salaries in the ground handling services were not enough to live on.
In addition, 72 percent of participants said that because of the work pressure, the safety and quality requirements often can not be met.
Consequently, Verdi decided to enhance common standards of qualification, health and safety in my collective agreement.
“The working conditions in the ground handling services have deteriorated dramatically through spin-offs, reductions and divisions in the past decade,” said Christine Behle, national board member of Verdi.
“Low health, heavy loads, very different rewards for the same activities and short training periods mean that the workers are exposed to an increasing pressure. To protect them and thus ensure the safety of passengers, we need a collective agreement for all employees in ground handling services at all airports and in all companies.” she added.
