Three airports on the northeast coast of the U.S. this year link directly to Athens, with Delta, American and United Airlines operating at JFK, Philadelphia and Newark Airport International respectively. The fluctuation of prices can be monitored at Skyscanner.
In total, 3 airlines fly directly from the US to Athens International Airport ‘Eleftherios Venizelos’ connecting three different cities, New York, Newark and Philadelphia, with the first two airports being closest in comparison to the third and being often used as alternatives.
The interesting question is, of course, how ticket prices are determined, since not only are there additional carriers now with direct services, but also they plan to increase flighs and capacity compared to last year. According to SkyScanner, for the indicative period from July 1st (departure) up to 31 August (return), the prices of direct flights range from 1,688 to 2,773 dollars. The minimum price of $1688 is offered by United with departure from Newark Airport, and the maximum price is charged by Lufthansa from the same airport. On the other hand, the deals for flights with Delta range close to 1840 dollars. It is notable though that if someone chooses to return a day later (September 1) the price for direct connection from JFK drops to $1688 from $1838 ($150 less).
On the contrary, the first fortnight of July (1-15) is much cheaper with a price of under $1000 for a direct flight from JFK, while the $1688 price remains unchanged for Newark. However, the price goes up again and exceeds $1700 if anyone wants to get a ticket for all of July, while the 1-16 July price almost doubles.
According to Skyscanner, for the same time periods, prices on indirect connections start from $800-900 round-trip and rise, without ever reaching direct flight cost levels. In these cases, of course, if you have the ability, it is advisable to check other parameters as well, such as the duration of transit in order for the trip not to resemble… Odyssey.
In Philadelphia, flights with American Airlines seem rather stable close to $1688 dollars with the first fortnight of July again much cheaper at $1137.
Needless to say, these values are indicative as the ticket buying process requires a lot of… homework and a little bit of luck!
