Rail Cargo Logistics Goldair carried out its first freight route on Wednesday, beginning from the Sindos industrial district of Thessaloniki, in northern Greece.
The development comes after three and a half years of clearing bureaucratic “hurdles” and preparations by the RCLG-joint venture between Greece-based Goldair and the Austrian Federal Railways (?BB), which was founded in 2014.
A relevant ceremony was scheduled to mark RCLG’s first freight route, in the presence of Austrian ambassador to Greece Andrea Ikic-B?hm.
Rail Cargo Logistics Goldair Executive Vice President Kallinikos Kallinikos, in statements on the sidelines of an inauguration ceremony, said the company’s aim is to improve its services and extend them to all parts of Greece, while eventually linking Greece to all European countries through Rail Cargo’s network, according to ANA.
Kallinikos pointed out that Goldair Cargo was the first private company to be licenced to operate its own trains after TRAINOSE, while highlighting the company’s cooperation with the state-run Austrian railway and the valuable knowhow it could offer.
He added that Goldair will start by operating one train journey on the Thessaloniki-Idomeni route each day and aimed to increase this to two or three daily runs by the end of the year, carrying up to 400,000 tonnes a year. The company hopes to tap into the container market at Thessaloniki port, including goods transiting Greece and going to central Europe.
