EASA Certification at Heraklion and Alexandroupoli Airports

The EASA certification process for the international airports of Heraklion and Alexandroupoli, which belong to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), has been successfully completed.

The Certificate was awarded to the CAA by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Friday, January 24, 2025, at a special event held at the CAA premises, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Vasilis Economou.

Heraklion State Airport “N. Kazantzakis”, the second largest airport in the country, and Alexandroupoli Airport “Demokritos” are the first CAA airports to receive the certification, confirming their compliance with the requirements of the European Union and EASA for their operational operation and organizational structure.

The certification covers all infrastructure, and procedures for smooth and safe operation, as well as the structure of a modern airport service provider. It is the culmination of the systematic and methodical effort of the Administration and the executives of the Hellenic Aviation Authority, aiming at the smooth and safe operation of all state airports in the country.

The certifications of the state airports of Ioannina, Milos, and Syros follow on January 31, 2025, as well as the airports of Kythira, Chios, and Sitia on February 14, 2025. The process will be completed before the end of February, with the certification of the state airports of Karpathos and Limnos, thus reaching a total of ten airports with EASA certification, as provided for by the APA.

The Governor of the Hellenic Aviation Authority, Mr. George Saunatsos, stated: “The certification of our airports, which has been a regulatory requirement for a number of years, constitutes a significant milestone in the aviation sector, as well as for our Service as a provider of airport operations. At the same time, it marks the intensification of a concerted effort to address operational challenges and improve the overall image of our airports, with the aim of providing a better travel experience to passengers.”
