Volotea: Codeshare cooperation with Aegean to run on 13 routes

The codeshare cooperation between Aegean and the Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea is expanding during the 2025 summer season.

The cooperation is being developed to cover more than 10 routes, which will gradually start from March 30 and last until October 25, 2025.

In particular, within the framework of the cooperation between the carriers, Volotea will operate 5 Aegean Airlines routes: Two connections from Heraklion, to Palermo and Strasbourg, two routes from Araxos to Lille and Nantes as well as the Kefalonia – Bari route.

Accordingly, Aegean Airlines will operate 8 routes on behalf of Volotea, of which 7 concern connections from Athens (to Florence, Ibiza, Lisbon, Olbia, Palma, Seville and Zagreb) and one from Thessaloniki (to Barcelona).

It is estimated that together the airlines will continue to offer over 100 routes in Europe using aircraft from both companies.

Aegean Airlines has been a commercial partner of Volotea since 2021 and a full codeshare partner since September 2024. With the signing of the codeshare agreement, the two airlines have expanded their commercial relationship and created a long-term strategic partnership to improve connectivity in Greece and increase their joint presence across Europe.

Athens base closure

Volotea has announced that it will close its Athens base at the end of summer 2025, after 6 years, but that it will continue to fly to and from the airport via services offered from other cities in the current Volotea network.

The announcement came as a surprise as the carrier has been steadily expanding its network from Athens and raising its profile in the Greek market in recent years. The airline offers direct flights from Athens to 16 different locations across Europe with new year-round flights to Marseille and Lyon from Athens in 2023. In 2024, the carrier has also added a number of new European destinations such as Naples, Brest, and Split.

Greece was the smallest of Volotea’s 21 bases in 2024, accounting for just 0.7% of its planned weekly capacity. Over 90% of the airline’s planned weekly capacity is focused on routes to airports in France, Italy, and Spain.

As recently as early 2024, the airline had revealed its plans to increase its capacity from Athens by 13% compared to 2023 and offer more than 1.6 million seats across Greece for the year.
