Athens Airport: 2025 started on a positive note,+14.5% passengers in January

Passenger traffic at Athens Airport started on a positive note in January.

According to data from Athens International Airport (AIA) Eleftherios Venizelos, passenger traffic at Athens Airport during January 2025 amounted to 1.83 million, an increase of 14.5% compared to 2024.

Both domestic and international passenger traffic exceeded 2024 levels by 5.1% and 18.7% respectively.

Flights in January 2025 at Athens Airport

The number of flights at Athens International Airport during January 2025 amounted to 16,546, recording an increase of 10.1% compared to 2024. Domestic flights experienced a slight decrease of 2.5%, while international flights increased by 19.1% compared to January 2024.

Record year in 2024

2024 was a year of historical records for Athens Airport. Passenger traffic amounted to 31.85 million passengers, 13.1% more than in 2023 when 28.1 million passengers arrived.

Significant double-digit growth was consistently recorded in all months of 2024 in international passenger traffic, with the largest increases observed in the so-called “shoulder” periods, boosting Athens’ traffic and off-season months.

In terms of route development, some of the most notable developments of the past year were:

-Air China increased the frequency of flights on the Beijing-Athens route, starting on April 1, from three to five per week.

-The landing of the first direct flight connecting Shanghai with Athens, operated by Juneyao Airlines, on April 2.

-LOT Polish Airlines reinstated the Athens-Warsaw connection on April 11.

-On May 30, Norse Atlantic Airways inaugurated the start of its first direct flights between Athens and New York JFK.

-In the same month, Smartwings launched the Prague – Athens connection, with 2 weekly flights.

– United Airlines launched a new, daily seasonal direct connection to Chicago (O’Hare), increasing flights from Greece by over 30% for 2024.

-On June 28, the new non-stop connection to Athens from Sharjah was launched, via Air Arabia

-Asiana Airlines’ Seoul – Athens connection also started in June, complementing Korean Air’s offer

-Delta Air Lines and American Airlines extended the season to Athens, offering flights earlier than the original May and June schedules.

– Emirates increased the frequency of flights on the Dubai – Athens route, in addition to the Athens – New York (EWR) route, which operates throughout the year.

-easyJet rediscovered Athens by adding new routes for 2025 and doubling its seat capacity compared to 2023.

-Aegean Airlines increased its flights and capacity with new routes to Palermo, Vilnius and Abu Dhabi

-SKY Express continued to expand its network in the international market, adding 7 new routes and increasing its total destination network to 45, of which 18 are international.

At the same time, Gulf Air increased its capacity to Athens by 46% last year – compared to 2023-, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays upgraded their offer from Manchester for the entire year, increasing capacity by 18%, Air Transat also increased capacity by 18%, Air Canada by 10% and Volotea by 22%.

Promising prospects for 2025

New prospects are opening up for 2025, as, according to data from aviation analytics company Cirium, nonstop flights to Athens this year will amount to 128,249 compared to 119,043 in 2024.
