The first robotic restaurant with artificial intelligence at Barcelona Airport

Barcelona Airport (BCN) has inaugurated the first restaurant in the world, operated by artificial intelligence. The restaurant, called SELF, was created in collaboration with Areas, a Spanish multinational in the food and beverage and travel retail sector.

Spread over a space of 137 m2, SELF offers popular airport food and drinks, such as coffee, premium sandwiches, juices, pastries, salads, pasta, desserts, and soft drinks, ensuring daily freshness and quality.

Areas, with a presence in 11 countries, has chosen Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport to inaugurate SELF, the first robotic restaurant with artificial intelligence in an airport in the world.
Developed with Spanish engineering by IJRRob?tica and AEV, SELF incorporates technology from MasterCard, Kuka, ICG, and brands such as Coca-Cola, Lavazza, Danone, and Mahou San Miguel, with design contributions from GAC 3000 and Espluga + Associates. This pioneering project is the result of years of research, which studied the requirements of the new generation of travelers.
SELF works together with the human team to assist customers, offering a unique and differentiated experience during their trip, while offering the products most in demand in airports.
The new store is located in the commercial area of ??Terminal 1, next to boarding gate B24 at Barcelona Airport, part of the Aena network, and covers 137 m2.

Robotic arm waiter

SELF offers an innovative, fully automated experience, using an advanced robotic arm capable of handling six orders at the same time. Customers order and pay via a touchscreen, receive a ticket with a QR code, and are notified on a screen when their tray is ready. Machine vision with artificial intelligence allows the system to optimize decisions in real-time, improving the speed and quality of service.

The system operates autonomously while working closely with human resources to improve the customer experience, ensuring personalized service, efficient inventory management, and optimized procurement.

SELF is also aligned with Areas’ sustainability strategy. The restaurant features:

Energy-efficient LED technology to reduce energy consumption.
FSC-certified paper packaging, which is 100% recyclable.
Eco-friendly uniforms are made from organic cotton
