April 2025 closed for global air transport with an 8% increase in revenue per passenger kilometer, +6.5% in capacity, and +1.1 percentage points in load factor (83.6%).
According to data presented by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), demand for international travel increased by 10.8% compared to April 2024, capacity increased by 8.5%, and the load factor by 1.7 percentage points, reaching 84.1%, the highest level of all time for April.
The strong performance was driven by the return of the transatlantic market to growth, but as IATA Director General Willie Walsh points out, there are signs of fragility in consumer and business confidence as the US domestic market continues to record weak results and premium travel in North America records a sharp decline.
Domestic flights in April 2025 recorded an increase in demand by 3.3%, capacity by 3.1%, and load factor by 0.1 percentage point, to 82.7%.

Mr. Walsh speaks of remarkable growth in the domestic market in India, which shows a rise of 10%, continuing the impressive growth of connectivity in recent years in the country.
In individual regions,
– Africa, after two consecutive months of decline, recorded an impressive increase in demand by 13.6%. Available capacity increased by 8.9%, and the load factor improved by 3.1 percentage points, reaching 76.3%.
-Asia-Pacific airlines recorded the largest increase in demand of all regions, with +14.4% compared to April 2024. Capacity growth reached 12.7%, with the load factor reaching 85.3%, up 1.3 percentage points.
-European carriers recorded a rise in demand by 9.4%, with a capacity increase of 7.7%. The load factor stood at 84.5%, also up 1.3 percentage points.
-Middle Eastern airlines saw an 11.2% increase in demand, with a 6.6% increase in available capacity and the largest increase in load factor, reaching 83.1% (+3.4 percentage points).
-In North America, international demand increased by 5.4%, with capacity increasing by 2.6%. Despite the positive change in the overall load factor (83.4%, +2.2 points), the significant 26% decrease in demand for First and Business classes is of concern, possibly as a result of changing travel preferences or economic conditions.
-Latin American airlines saw an increase in demand by 13.9% and +14.6% in available capacity. However, the occupancy rate fell by 0.6 percentage points to 83.2%, making it the only region with a decline in this indicator.
