Yet another new flight, this time from Istanbul to the island of Rhodes, was inaugurated yesterday, Tuesday 3 June, by AEGEAN, which now directly connects Istanbul Airport with Rhodes’ “Diagoras” Airport. As usual, the launch of the new route was accompanied by a simple ceremonial welcoming ceremony for the first passengers, which was held in collaboration with Fraport Greece and the island’s local tourism organizations.
Executives of AEGEAN and Fraport Greece attended the airport, where, together with the Deputy Mayor of Tourism and Culture of the island, Mr. Giorgos Toppos, as well as the President of the Rhodes Hoteliers’ Association, Mr. Yannis Papavassiliou, gave the passengers of the flight that made a “footstep”, a warm welcome, offering them local delicacies and souvenirs. The ceremony concluded with the customary ribbon cutting and a photo session with the crew in front of the AEGEAN aircraft, marking the start of the new air connection between Rhodes and Istanbul.
On the occasion of the “official first” of the new flight, Mrs. Marina Spyridaki, AEGEAN’s Corporate Affairs Director, stated in this regard, “We are particularly happy to inaugurate yet another new direct flight of AEGEAN to and from Rhodes, one of the most popular and beloved Greek destinations. Our aim is for the new route that directly connects Rhodes with Istanbul, one of the long-haul air hubs in our wider region, to contribute to the further development of the destination, but also to further strengthen the development potential of the island, establishing it as a “base” destination for other nearby island destinations. That is why the design of our network this summer provides for direct connections with Heraklion, Chania, and Santorini, in addition to the established connections with Kastelorizo, Karpatho,s and of course Athens and Thessaloniki. Rhodes for AEGEAN has always been a very important pillar of the company’s successful course, which is why this year we are offering approximately 1 million seats, increased by 3% compared to last year, anticipating another successful year for the island and its people.”
For her part, Ms. Katerina Pollatou, Airline Marketing & Development Manager of Fraport Greece, noted “Today, together with our partners at AEGEAN, we inaugurated the new direct Rhodes-Istanbul flight, which significantly strengthens the island’s connectivity with both the growing market of Turkey and markets of high interest, through one of the largest European hubs. The new tourist season is developing positively for Rhodes airport, which confirms the destination’s potential and the importance of strengthening its direct connectivity with major foreign markets. What is required for all of us who operate on the island are the coordinated efforts that will contribute to further strengthening Rhodes’ position on the international tourist map.”
The new direct AEGEAN flight that has just started and connects Istanbul with Rhodes will operate twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday, for the entire summer season.
