Ryanair increases free cabin baggage allowance on European flights

Ryanair has announced an increase in the size of the free “personal bag” allowed in the cabin, following a proposal by the European Union to improve passenger rights.

The low-cost airline will increase the maximum size of the bag that fits under the seat from 40x25x20 cm to 40x30x20 cm, now offering a capacity of 24 liters instead of 20 liters. The new limit brings it on par with WizzAir, although it remains smaller than easyJet (45x36x20 cm).

According to statements from a Ryanair spokesperson, the change will be implemented gradually in the coming weeks, as special measurement frames at airports are adjusted.

Ryanair’s decision comes after the European Parliament’s Transport Committee voted in favour of changes to passenger rights regulations. Under the proposal, airlines would be required to allow one small piece of hand luggage measuring up to 40x30x15 cm and one smaller bag weighing up to 7 kg free of charge.

However, the proposal does not yet have the force of law, as it requires the approval of at least 55% of EU member states to be implemented.

Ryanair’s move is believed to reflect growing pressure on airlines to harmonise their policies and make things easier for passengers, after years of criticism over strict and often expensive hand luggage regulations.
