Which European airports are at risk of transaction fraud – Athens' position

Athens Airport ranks at the top of the list of smaller but important airports in Europe with an increased risk of transaction fraud, along with Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

This is according to a study conducted by fraud prevention and digital identity solutions provider Accertify.

According to the study, which is based on data from Accertify’s airline clients from 2024-2025, flights related to “El. Venizelos” experience more fraud attempts compared to other airports of similar size.

Meanwhile, airline fraud rates have declined across all regions of the world in the first half of 2025. Based on an analysis of millions of airline transactions across all major carriers, Accertify found that global fraud rates fell 30% year-over-year to 0.25%, or one fraud attempt per 400 bookings.

The decline was most pronounced in Europe, where fraud pressure on outbound flights halved compared to the same period last year. European routes now account for just 12% of all fraud attempts globally, down from 24% in the first half of 2024. Similarly, in the United States, fraud rates on domestic and international travel fell 38%, to one fraud attempt per 556 bookings (0.18%).

Among major European airports with at least one million bookings, the lowest rates of attempted fraud were recorded at Krakow International Airport (Poland), Bristol Airport (UK) and Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (Italy).

Naples Capodichino International Airport (Italy) recorded the largest drop in attempted fraud (-57%), followed by EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg International Airport (almost -50%).

High-risk hubs include London Heathrow Airport and Humberto Delgado Airport (Portugal).
